Module 4 - Enlisting and Providing Support

Questions you have with which your colleagues may be able to provide help and support

Is there another way my voice can be heard that I may be missing for this advocacy plan?

If you are a parent what would you like to see more of in schools to promote literacy?

Resources and information you are seeking

I am seeking ways to lessen my time....I don't want it to be too boring....I want it to be informative but also not bore my crowd.

I am also looking for ways to calm myself before this presentation. :) I have such strong feelings for early literacy that I am hoping once I get started that I'll calm down but I'm just so nervous that I'll forget something important to stress because I'm so nervous.

Resources and/or information you have found helpful and insightful

I really found this website to be extremely helpful and have a lot of information in it.

  1. I am so sorry to ask but what exactly is your advocacy plan on it is on family support?
I recommend that you practice your advocacy plan on people you are comfortable with like your friend or family member. I do this with every presentations and this is helps my nerves a lot. When I am done I always asks for their feedback and draw from it, so when I present my presentation I won’t be so edgy. I hope this helps and good luck.

    1. With reference to early literacy, I feel that it can be a challenge if you don't lessen some of your information. My plan is on a similiar topic, and I have found that after speaking with other professionals that I had too much information.

You will not be boring, continue to show your passion and put your heart into your presentation. You will do fine. Good Luck.

    2. Lisa- I think you are on the right track! My nerves do get the best of me when talking in front of people or even parents. A great way to not seem boring is to do a warm up involving parents. Sometimes I get a big beach ball and write questions on them concerning the main topic, something funny, or even just to learn more about the parent. Some questions can be what age did you start reading? what are your expectations in early literacy? Embarrassing moments during reading time? Or even have the class to sing a song that may have some spelling in it or a poem. This way parents are more tuned in.

  3. Lisa, I think that most parents would want a supportive environment to help their child experience positive feelings about self and literacy activities. There are many ways that your voice can be heard because when you speak about something that you are passionate about I think that people will listen and not get bored. I don’t have an answer about finding ways to calm your-self because I am seeking that same advice. I think that many of us are having issues with trying to figure out how to get through this presentation. I wish you the best of luck in this class.

  4. Lisa from the beginning of your presentation give the audience information on why you feel so passionate about your topic, many may feel the same way as you do. When it comes to early literacy sadly but true many think that starts in school but studies have shown that learning begins in the home. Provide them with activities during your presentation to keep them interested in what you speaking about Early Literacy that way they can feel more involved then just attending a lecture. Best of Luck for you, the other classmates, as well as myself with presenting our Advocacy Action Plan.

  5. I feel the same about not wanting to bore parents and others. It is important to get our point across and make it easy, simple and fast. I think all parents should understand the importance of literacy and how it affects their child throughout life. I am practicing meditation before my presentations. This allows me to focus and get my self calm and focused on the importance of my presentation. You will be fine in your presentation just be yourself and relax. Best of luck to you in your presenting your Advocacy Action Plan.

  6. As a parent , I would like to see more homework in literacy and less mathematics. My daughter is in second grade and every night she has math homework. I know this is as important as literacy but I need to see more literacy for homework. I think you should start off your presentation with an ice-breaker to calm your nerves. This way you can ease right into it.
